Contact the Arts Officer if you are interested in getting involved with drama in St. Hilda's. Last year at St. Hilda’s saw three productions: two in Michaelmas term and one in Hilary.
In Michaelmas, Freshers participated in Drama
Cuppers, a competition in which Freshers write, direct, produce and
perform their own play of approximately 30 minutes length. The 2008
Freshers put on “A Class Apart” – a play exploring the differences
in Freshers arriving at Oxford, from differences in class and
background, to differences
in
intellect and style. The comedy piece was a resounding success,
gaining a Top Ten place in the finals. Nominated for 3 Awards, the
play was the talk of College for most of Michaelmas.
Michaelmas also saw a performance of “A Streetcar Named Desire”, with Freshers Jonathan Sims, Nicolas Pierce and Alice Fletcher joining veteran second-year Michaela Chamberlain as the principle roles. The play was performed in 8th week of Michaelmas under the direction of Finalist Emma Grisdale and produced by Emma Sadler.
In
Hilary, Fresher Emily Mayne took on the might of Shakespeare by
directing “Twelfth Night” to great success. Putting in touches of
modern absurdism in the design made brilliant contrast with the
Elizabethan content! The cast comprised mainly Freshers, with
Finalist Emma Grisdale taking a break from direction to play Viola/Cesario,
in a love-triangle with Jack Cook’s Orsino and Kate Etheridge’s
Olivia. Nicolas Pierce took to the stage again to play the much
abused Malvolio, taunted by Becky Hancock’s Maria, and Alex Bates
and Charlie Trew playing the double act of Andrew Aguecheek and Toby
Belch!
2009 should see even more excellent pieces of drama, so get involved and get on the stage!
